Ascension in Sword of Immortality is a one-way door, and the game gives no warning about the preparation it assumes. Four items decide whether the first day in the Spirit Realm is a gear-up or a repair job: a currency floor, one item you must not consume, a pill toxicity window, and a claim that has to be timed. This chapter lists them in the order they have to happen.
The figures here — 5,000, 20–24, 24 hours, 50 attempts — come from a single corpus entry. No official ascension page was available to verify them. Re-check the values in the live client after a patch; the sequence of steps is stable, the numbers are not guaranteed to be.
Why is ascension a one-way decision?
Crossing into the Spirit Realm reads as a promotion, but the mistakes that follow are silent. A consumed Training Manual, a claim collected at the wrong realm, and a Lunjian Stone balance far below what the new content expects all pass without a warning at the moment they happen, and none can be reversed afterward. The prep work is therefore worth more than the first hour of play after the crossing.
It helps to know where the door sits on the ladder: the realms run Qi Refining, Foundation Establishment, Golden Core, Nascent Soul, Spirit Transformation, Void Refining, Fusion, Mahayana and Tribulation before the Immortal Realm, and ascension is the boundary between the Human Realm and the Spirit Realm. The beginner guide holds the full realm table if you need to check your current stage.
How many Lunjian Stones should you bank?
Stock 5,000 or more Lunjian Stones. The number is a floor, not a target: ascending at exactly 5,000 means arriving with no cushion, and the Spirit Realm's early costs do not adjust themselves to your minimum.
The reason is that early Spirit Realm progression is gated behind currency you earn before you get there. A thin balance does not merely slow you down; it burns your first weeks farming currency you could have banked for free while still in the Human Realm. Bank more than the floor if you can.
Why should you not read the Training Manual?
Hold the Training Manual. Do not read it before ascending, because after ascension the same item becomes the Spirit Realm Star Chart. Reading it early gives you the Human Realm version of the reward and removes the Spirit Realm version permanently.
This is the most punishing item on the list precisely because nothing about it looks dangerous. It is presented as a reward, it is consumable, and the transformation is invisible until after the crossing. Treat it as locked until you have flown.
After ascension, read it. The prohibition covers the pre-ascension window only; the item is the reward you want on the far side of the door.
Why arrive with 20–24 pill toxicity?
Pill toxicity is the penalty stat that accumulates from consuming pills. The general rules are to eat only blue-quality pills or better and to feed low-tier pills to spirit beasts, because a major realm breakthrough clears 20 points of pill toxicity. The pre-ascension instruction is to arrive carrying 20–24.
The arithmetic explains the odd-looking advice. Ascension is a major breakthrough, the breakthrough clears 20 points, and landing at 0–4 leaves you close to a clean slate at the exact moment the new realm's pill economy opens up. Arriving at zero wastes the clear, because there is nothing for it to remove. Arriving above 24 overflows the window and leaves residual toxicity after the clear. The 20–24 band uses the full clear without spilling past it.
Keep the general rule running while you hold the window. Do not push past 24 by eating junk pills in the last few days before you fly, and do not start eating low-quality pills just to reach the band.
When should you claim Monian Abyss?
Monian Abyss is the daily 50-attempt suppression activity, and its rewards accumulate up to a 24-hour storage cap. The claim is the one action on this list with a hard clock attached.
Do not claim before ascension. Claim only after both of these are true: you have ascended to the Spirit Realm, and you have broken through to Void Refining. The enhancement tables label this same band Return to Void (返虚) — one ladder position under an alternate name, not a second realm. The reward pool is read at the moment of claiming, not at the moment of earning, so a claim at that point returns Void Refining gear and can complete a full set quickly.
That converts two realm boundaries' worth of low-realm rewards into the gear tier you are about to start farming, which can compress weeks of gearing into one claim. The 24-hour cap is what makes this a planning problem rather than a free reset: you have to ascend and reach Void Refining inside the storage window.
Time the ascension around the storage, not the storage around the ascension. If the Void Refining push takes longer than 24 hours from your last claim, fix that progression speed before you start holding the rewards, so the window is comfortable rather than a race. If the rewards expire, you claim at whatever realm you are standing in and lose the gear conversion.
What is the full ascension checklist?
The sequence, in the order it has to be executed:
| Step | Action | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Stockpile 5,000+ Lunjian Stones | Before ascension — ongoing |
| 2 | Do not read the Training Manual | Before ascension — hold it |
| 3 | Arrive at ascension with 20–24 pill toxicity | At the moment of ascension |
| 4 | Ascend; the breakthrough clears 20, leaving 0–4 | Ascension |
| 5 | Do not claim Monian Abyss — hold it inside the 24-hour storage | After ascension |
| 6 | Break through to Void Refining | Inside the 24-hour window |
| 7 | Claim Monian Abyss — Void Refining gear, full set | After the Void Refining breakthrough |
| 8 | Read the Training Manual (now the Spirit Realm Star Chart) | After ascension |
Steps 1–3 are banking. Steps 5–7 are a timed sequence that must finish inside the storage cap, which is why the currency and the held manual come first: they are what make the post-ascension sprint to Void Refining fast enough to beat the clock. Step 8 comes last because the item only becomes the Star Chart after the crossing.
Which mistakes cannot be undone?
Four failures are permanent, and each one costs a resource you cannot farm back at the same price:
- Reading the Training Manual early. The item is replaced by the Spirit Realm Star Chart on ascension, and consuming it first removes that outcome. There is no undo.
- Ascending at zero pill toxicity. The 20-point clear is a resource. Arriving at zero spends it on nothing.
- Claiming Monian Abyss before the Void Refining breakthrough. The reward pool reads your realm at claim time, so an early claim keeps low-realm gear and loses the conversion.
- Treating 5,000 Lunjian Stones as the goal. It is the minimum you refuse to ascend below, not the amount that makes the new realm comfortable.
Everything else on the list is recoverable at a cost in time. These four are not, which is why the checklist is ordered the way it is: the banked items first, the timed sequence second, the transforming item last.
Once you are through, the Spirit Realm's own route — Miexing Ark, Demon Abyss and Wushan — determines where the new currency and gear actually get spent; the map chapter lays out that order, and the glossary fixes the item names if you are matching them against the client.
